Change, Renewal & Improvement: These concepts took center stage in 2008, and fittingly so. Our nation’s prosperity bubble came to an end as the economy slowed, then stalled and finally collapsed, with a recession producing casualties stretching from Wall Street to Main Street.  Businesses and entire market segments struggled, as the housing and credit boom went bust.  As if in response, the country took part in a historic presidential election which also promised renewal through change the results of which will allow for the inauguration of the nation’s first African-American President in our history.  President Elect Obama will be meeting head-on the challenge of returning our nation to prosperity and financial health, while also working to deliver programs designed to make life in America better than ever.  


 Change,Renewal & Improvement, is also the mantra and goal of NAUMD, with the association promising better services and more value than had ever been experienced in the past.  Has it delivered?  More importantly, has the NAUMD prepared its members for the challenges of 2010-11?  Read on and judge for yourself:  


NAUMD Growth: A Study in Service Since 2006 NAUMD has welcomed over 150 new members to the organization! These have included Uniform Dealers, Manufacturers, Associate and Consultant Members from the United States, Canada and Mexico! During this period, NAUMD lost less than 20% of its membership, while the national average for the same period for other Associations was *34% loss in Membership (source American Society of Association Executives)  


2010 Convention:  Not Business as Usual
The reformation of the association’s annual convention continued in 2010.  Held in Las Vegas, the 2010 convention featured speakers skilled in the business of electronic communications, government, law and industry.  The two-day exhibit showcased both established and cutting edge items from North America’s premier uniform and Imagewear suppliers.  Never before seen products were launched at the New Products Showcase, influencing the purchasing decisions of many.    Entertainers Gary Lewis & The Playboys  hosted the Image of the Year Awards, an exciting and fun event recognizing the most innovative identity apparel designs of 2010.

In-depth professional development seminars pinpointed the concerns of those doing business with the US Postal Service, US Armed Services and numerous areas of Corporation’s efforts to build their brand through imagewear programs, and offered practical solutions that members could apply back home in their businesses including electronic communications, sales techniques for the new century, Human Resource Law, Financial Management and more.

In the area of member services, the association used the meeting as a springboard for a number of new initiatives, including a comprehensive and affordable insurance and health care package.   Conventioneers responded to the not-business-as-usual event in numbers not seen in recent memory.  Over 500 decision making, policy making leaders attended, with several exhibitors overheard saying that they’d “done more business on the exhibit floor than ever before.”  


NAUMD IOY Awards:  The Industry’s Gold Standard
NAUMD's Image of the Year Awards Program has become the “gold standard” of the association’s branding efforts, and is an excellent example of effective branding at work.    A streamlined entry process, the enlistment of high quality, impartial judges and an emphasis on member design and expertise created significant industry buzz!     The decision to move the awards ceremony to a black tie dinner affair during the convention brought with it the professionalism and stature the event craved, and breathed new life into the program.    The 2010 IOY Banquet was held on Saturday, March 6 at The Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, featuring Gary Lewis & The Playboys who provided the evening’s entertainment.     


NAUMD's Best Dressed Public Safety Awards
The Best Dressed Public Safety Awards Competition – has also received an additional facelift.  “NAUMD members who design these programs should also be in the spotlight and gain recognition for all the effort made to increase the value of the uniforms and accessories for the more comfortable performance of the public safety officers.” Say NAUMD President Richard Lerman.   Taking its cue from IOY advances, the competition instituted an on-line entry process and a panel of experts from industry, business and media to decide the contest.  “Our goal is to re-establish the Best Dressed Public Safety Awards as the pinnacle of public safety apparel and accessories design,” said Lerman.   All finalists and winning entries were showcased during a Special Awards Breakfast at the Las Vegas convention on Saturday, March 6, 2010.  



2009 EXPANSION: National to North American Continued! 
2009 The NAUMD Imagewear Uniform conference in Toronto.  Speakers included US & Canadian Governement Representatives, a Session on Greening of the Uniform Industry and an open discussion on improving business conditions between US & Canadian Business!  A number of informal, social events also provided excellent networking opportunities along with the chance to generate new business. The event was far better attended than anyone could have hoped for and plans for the 2010 Canadian Conference are already underway.  

2009-10:  Financial Crisis to New Opportunities:
NAUMD is now poised to assist its members to meet the significant challenges ahead through the addition of new services and programs to include Sales Professional Hiring Testing,  a Discounted Merchant Services Program (Credit Card Processing), Staples Business Advantage Office Supply discounts, GSA Listing education and marketing and continuing Legislative & Regulatory Compliance assistance. NAUMD will be expanding its message distribution to numerous media outlets to make the public and purchasing professionals more aware of the value of uniform & imagewear programs to THEIR organizations. A new program outreach to  encourage young executives to consider the uniform & imagewear industry as a career choice will be made through the Fashion Institute of Technology, Parsons and numerous other institutions. Members of NAUMD will be continually receiving benefits, programs and services to assist them in meeting this challenge and keeping the Uniform & Imagewear Industry the strong and healthy.
